I’m very much looking forward to the studio visits that this coming weekend will bring. I thoroughly enjoy chats with old friends and getting to know new acquaintances… for which The Wave Artists Studio Tour provides the perfect opportunity. Please drop by my studio in Winnipeg Beach on Saturday or Sunday (4 or 5 September)—I’m number 13 on the tour map… look for the blue and white sign posted on Highway 9 to catch the turnoff (at the Lady of the Lake Church on Lake Avenue)… follow signs to the flag (and the unmistakable white picket fence) at 275 Eaton Street.

“Readers” have proven to be particularly popular since I introduced them late last fall. Dozens of new ones have emerged from the kiln and are now buried in their books, awaiting empathetic bibliophiles and bookworms.

I’m making good progress on the body of sculptural work that’s been my focus this past year… and if I can keep up the pace, it appears I’ll be able to fulfill the year-long goals I outlined in my successful application for a 2009 Manitoba Arts Council Craft Grant (entitled “Mostly Well Behaved.”) I’ll post sneak peaks of additional completed pieces that are part of the tableau over the coming weeks and months…

On The Surface, All Seemed Normal Figurative slab-built stoneware sculpture, finished with low-fire glazes and iron oxide stian (augmented with cold-finishes); sterling silver bridle and a formed copper bit; 420mm x 210mm x 340mm tall.

A big thanks to everyone (each and every one of you!) who came out to the Wave Tour between the downpours on Saturday and the incredible sunshine of last Sunday… so good to feel that heat on our sun-starved bodies, no?

I loved our chats and exchanges and hope you will visit again soon! Feel free to contact me if you have forgotten a birthday (hey, it happens) or anniversary that you might want to honour with a small (or large) gift.

My ceramic sculptural piece, entitled (no fixed address), has been accepted into the Manitoba Crafts Council 2010 Juried Exhibition: Home. Not only that, but it was also chosen to grace the invitation (image above). Well, never a dull moment here on the great lake… freakish east-winds gusting to 90 km/h pushed the spring ice break-up into nearly 50′-high (15 meter) “ice mountains” along the shoreline this weekend in a once-in-a-lifetime phenomenon. Above are a few photos from just north of the marina earlier today (with my daughter Jennifer and grandson Sam—oh, and I’m back to being a brunette).

The piece I’m entering into the “Home”-themed Manitoba Crafts Council 2010 Annual Juried Exhibition next week is entitled (no fixed address). A slab-built stoneware sculpture with iron oxide stain, low-fire glazes, and assemblage elements (brass ring, antique key, jewelry-box base), the piece measures 280mm x 220mm x 380mm. It’s thought to be a great honour to receive the “key to the city”… the very streets of which so many call “home” today—(no fixed address) speaks to this irony.

On Friday, 5 February, you’re invited to the opening reception of the Manitoba Crafts Council 2010 Members’ Showcase, from 7-10pm, at the Cre8ery Gallery in Winnipeg, 2nd floor, 125 Adelaide (in the Exchange District). I’m one of 30 MCC members who will be exhibiting works: PJ Anderson, Aliza Amihude, Jan Ashton, Marilyn Folson, Ursula Neufeld, Louise Gardiner, Michael Astill, Linda Glowacki, Jolanta Sokalska, Natasha Halayda, Kathleen Black, Elise Nadeau, Pat Findlay, LeVerne Tucker, LeeAnne Penner, Carol James, Alison Norberg, Karen Schlichting, Tammy Sutherland, Valerie Metcalfe, Kathryne Koop, Rachael Kroeker, Helen Lyons, Jayne Nixon, Evelin Richter, Lily Rosenberg, Zbigniew Sokalski, Susan Styrchak, Gaetanne Sylvester and Karen Taylor.

The show will run until 16 February (gallery hours are 12-5pm Tuesday to Saturday, 6-10pm Monday and Thursday). The opening will offer the chance to meet the showcased artists, with snacks and a cash bar available.

Thanks(!) to all who came out to the Handmade Holiday Sale at the West End Cultural Centre this weekend and who helped make the event the success it was. I enjoyed meeting and visiting with you… your positive remarks and comments about some of my (admittedly quirky) ceramics were greatly appreciated. Thanks also to the fine folks and volunteers who took care of the planning, logistics, etc.

It was also good to finally meet some of the other artists involved with the Manitoba Crafts Council (I have heard and read about you, but have not had the privilege to actually meet many of you before this show).
